Judge awards N20,000 against Evans’ lawyer for ‘professional misconduct’

Justice Abdulazeez Anka of a
Lagos Division of the Federal
High Court Thursday
awarded a cost of N20,000
against Olukoya Ogungbeje,
counsel to suspected
kidnapper, Chukwudumeme
Onwuamadike, popularly
known as Evans.
The judge further issued a
warning to Mr. Ogungbeje to
desist from practices
unbecoming of a legal
practitioner.
The judge issued the orders
while adjourning a
fundamental rights suit filed
on behalf of Evans by Mr.
Ogungbeje, over alleged
illegal detention.
Joined as respondents in the
suit are: The Nigeria Police
Force, Lagos State Police
Command, The Commissioner
of Police Lagos State, and the
Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
Evans had sought a court’s
order directing the
respondents to immediately
charge him to court in
accordance with
constitutional provisions, if
there existed any case against
him.
In the alternative, he had
sought an order compelling
the respondents to
immediately release him
unconditionally in the
absence of any charge.
The case, which was
scheduled for hearing on
Thursday, could not proceed
as Mr. Ogungbeje, was absent
in court.
When the case was called, a
litigation officer from Mr.
Ogungbeje’s law firm,
Stephen Abunike, told the
court that his principal was
indisposed and had written a
letter

Buhari ‘sends condolences’ to Bisi Akande over wife’s death

President Muhammadu
Buhari has expressed “heart-
felt” sadness over the death
of Omowunmi Akande, wife
of the founding chairman of
the governing All
Progressives Congress, APC.
In a letter to the bereaved
party chieftain on
Wednesday, President Buhari
described as “irreparable”
the loss by Chief Akande of
his wife of 50 years, the
presidency said.
The president’s spokesperson,
Garba Shehu, said Mr. Buhari
had earlier phoned the
family to condole with them.
The President’s message
reads as follow: “I received
the very sad news of the
death of your dearly beloved
wife, Madam Omowunmi
Akande this morning.
I am following our phone call
with this letter of condolence,
which comes from my heart.
“To lose a wife, a dear wife
after 50 years, a constant and
loving companion through
good and bad times, is a blow
only a man of unshakeable
faith can withstand.
Please extend my personal
condolences to the immediate
and wider Akande family and
to friends of the family for
this irreparable loss.
“May Allah give you the
strength and Iman to endure
her passing away.”

Brazil full-back Dani Alves joined Paris St-Germain on a free transfer snubbing Manchester City.

Alves, who has signed a two-year deal, has opted against joining up with his former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

City were prepared to give the 34-year-old a two-year contract, but would not match the £230,000 a week it is understood he will receive in France.

Tottenham’s Kyle Walker remains City’s top target at right-back.

As City have so far failed to agree a fee with Spurs for England defender Walker, they are currently without a recognised right-back following the summer departures of out-of-contract duo Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

According to BBC Sports, the club are understood to be relaxed about the situation despite the fact they will leave for a three-match tour of the United States – featuring matches against Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham – on Monday.

Alves was a free agent after Juventus released him from his contract early following one season in Italy, in which he helped them to the Serie A and Coppa Italia double.

PSG announced his arrival with a video of the player printing his name and number on a shirt.

“Believe me, I am coming to Paris to win,” said Alves, who is the 30th Brazilian to play for the Ligue 1 club.

“In recent years, I have been able to gauge the incredible growth of this club, which has become a European football powerhouse. It’s very exciting to now be part of this great project.”

Transfer window

Real Madrid have offloaded Burgui onto
second-tier side Alaves.
Burgui spent last season on loan at Sporting
Gijon and has signed a four-year contract at
Alaves.
It is claimed Burgui has been sold for a minimal
fee.
But the Bernabeu side have inserted a buy-back
clause in the 23-year-old's contract in case they
decide to bring him back to the capital.
14:00: Barcelona have signed teenager Vitinho
from Palmeiras on loan, with a £10m option to
buy.
Vitinho, 19, will play for Barca's B team this
season and could be promoted to the first team
if he impresses.
"I'm really happy to be here," Vitinho told
Barcelona’s website.
"I have always been a big follower of Barca, the
best club in the world, and now I can play for the
same team where Rivaldo and Ronaldinho were
such a success and with my idol, Neymar."
13:30: Chelsea are the bookies favourites to sign
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solheko claimed
Borussia Dortmund offered their prolific striker to
Chelsea for £70million.
And bookmakers Betway have now made them
clear favourites to sign the Gabon international.
Betway’s Alan Alger, said: “After losing out on
Romelu Lukaku last week, Dortmund striker
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is said to be
Chelsea’s latest transfer target with the striker
5/4 to join the Blues this summer.
“Dortmund have slapped a £70m price tag on
Aubameyang and it looks to be either him or
Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, shorter in the
betting at 4/11, who will head to the west
London club.”
12:00 Real Madrid have named Chelsea target
Alvaro Morata in their US pre-season tour squad.
Morata will get a glimpse of what might have
been as Real Madrid and Manchester United
share the same facilities in Los Angeles.
The full Real Madrid squad:
Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla, Ruben
Yanez, Luca Zidane
Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Nacho,
Marcelo, Theo Hernandez, Danilo, Luis Quezada,
Alvaro Tejero, Achraf Hakimi, Manu Hernando
Midfielders: Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric,
Isco, Mateo Kovacic, Oscar, Franchu
Forwards: Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Lucas
Vazquez, Alvaro Morata, Dani Gomez
11:05: Manchester United have moved quickly to
deny they were beaten to the signing of James
Rodriguez.
Bayern Munich signed the talented midfielder
from Real Madrid yesterday on a two-year loan
deal with an option to buy.
But while the Red Devils were frequently linked
with the Colombian international, the
SundayWorld claim Jose Mourinho's side were
never interested in signing him.

Transfer news live: Liverpool receive Naby Keita boost and Manchester United target Spurs and Chelsea players

It's the summer transfer window and
Premier League clubs are splashing the
cash.
Cristiano Ronaldo , Alexis Sanchez, Kylian
Mbappe and Alvaro Morata are just a handful
of big-name players tipped for a move this
summer, with the likes
of Jose Mourinho , Arsene Wenger and
Antonio Conte all eager to bolster their
squads ahead of the new season.
Rather impressively, a number of clubs have
already set about their business early.
Manchester City were the summer’s early
pace setters, having already signed
both Bernardo Silva and Ederson, but rivals
United have caught them up landing the
summer's biggest deal so far, Romelu
Lukaku from Everton . The Toffees
meanwhile Everton have signed six new
faces including United's Wayne Rooney.
